Father’s day is always a special day for us at the Bible Baptist Church. This year was “extra” special as a tribute was presented by the young people for the fathers. The tribute was simply entitled, “A Spiritual Father”.

I had the privilege of bringing the message from Joshua 24:14-15 on the characteristics of a spiritual father. We took time honoring the Lord for giving us men who, in spite the difficulties and trials of this present world, are faithful in rearing up “generational warriors” who’ll take the truth of God’s Word and give to the next generation.

I. THE DEVOTION of a SPIRITUAL FATHER – V14

A. A Heart that Fears the Lord –

1. Knows God – A Heart for God
2. Knows His Precepts

B. Serves the Lord

1. In Sincerity
2. In Truth

C. To God Alone – “put away”

II. THE DIRECTION of a SPIRITUAL FATHER – V15a

A. Away from the Crowd –

B. Toward God’s Plan –

III. THE DECISION of a SPIRITUAL FATHER – V15c

A. Starts with himself – “as for me”

B. Influences and Includes his family – “and my house”

C. Demonstrates Determination – “we will serve the Lord”

Discerning the Will of GOD by George Mueller

Mueller listed the following steps he believed were necessary in determining God’s will regarding any decision. I thought they might be helpful to others:

  • “I get my heart into such a state that it has no will of its own in regard to any particular matter.”
  • “I do not leave the result to feelings or simple impressions. That can make one open to great delusions.”
  • “I seek God’s will through, or in connection with, his Word. If you look to the Spirit without the Word, you open yourself to delusion.”
  • “I consider providential [God-controlled] circumstances.”
  • “I ask God in prayer to reveal his will to me.”
  • “I make sure I have a clear conscience before God and man.”
  • “Every time I listened to men instead of God, I made serious mistakes.”
  • “I act only when I am at peace, after much prayer, waiting on God with faith.”

Context Note: In the next to the last point, I believe the context is related to obeying God over the faithless cautions of those who don’t really understand God’s will. God’s Word is clear that seeking godly counsel from wise men of faith is a safe and wise thing to do.

“For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety.” (Proverbs 24:6)

calendar-icon-300x300My Pastor and his wife had just concluded a wonderful month in the States. To get a glimpse of what they’ve experienced, here’s the itinerary of their trip.

They arrived in Anthony Kansas on May 19.

They were met by the Schott family as well as some US-based former members of the Bible Baptist Church in Davao.
